About the Book

They Said, “You’ll Never Amount to Anything”
Words Can Make or Break

...Is an emotionally charged story of teenagers, parents, teachers, coaches, as well as the prejudices of the high school principal.

In 1979, the motto at the small-town high school was “sex, drugs, and rock & roll.”

What happens when a 16-year-old girl is paddled in front of everyone in her homeroom class? What happens when a fight breaks out in the senior hallway between the school thug and the ex-Golden Boy?

A story of the powerful emotions of first love, what that love drives these characters to do, and the lives that are forever changed.

Bonnie Beck is a 16-year-old girl who reflects on the horrific conditions of her childhood when forced to face her past. Because of her disciplined upbringing, she possesses an incredibly strong will coupled with vision and drive to succeed under any circumstance.

Bonnie’s mother was 16 and pregnant. Bonnie’s father was 18 and was ordered to marry her by his father because it was the “right” thing to do. Bonnie and her brothers pay a heavy price because of this union.

Bonnie’s older brother, Robbie, is 14 years old when his parents divorce. He develops from a weak, sickly, little boy into a strong, defiant young man. He is incredible on the football field. People are amazed at the shocking blows he takes and always gets back up. What happens when Robbie comes face to face with his father after six years of no contact?

Bonnie’s best friend, Carrie, is a “Daddy’s Girl,” and all that that implies.

Jake has gone from an All-American athlete to a rebellious motorcycle rider after the sudden death of his father, and when his mother remarries shortly thereafter. He sees no way out until he decides to join the Army when he turns 18.

Bonnie’s mother, Marilyn, flips when she sees her daughter with Jake. For Marilyn, it is like stepping back in time.

Packed with all of the elements of an underdog story – poverty, rage, abuse, divorce, and death. Who will accept the cards that life has dealt them, and who will surpass even their own expectations?

Terri Lynn hopes to send a message of forgiveness, encourage others to rise above the negative words spoken over their lives, and realize the power of vision – whether negative or positive.
